Chapter 1: Welcome to Adobe Photoshop
Welcome to the world of digital imaging! Whether you are an aspiring photographer, a graphic designer, or just someone who wants to enhance their vacation photos, Adobe Photoshop is the industry-standard tool that will help you achieve your creative vision.
In this first chapter, we will start from the very beginning. We’ll explore what Photoshop is, how to get it set up on your computer, and how to create your very first document.
1.1 What is Photoshop?
Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Inc. First released in 1990, it has become the gold standard for digital art and photo manipulation.
What can you do with Photoshop?
- Photo Editing: Retouch, color correct, and enhance photographs.
- Digital Painting: Create artwork from scratch using digital brushes and tools.
- Graphic Design: Design posters, flyers, banners, and websites.
- Compositing: Combine multiple images to create a single, seamless composition.
1.2 Installing and Setting Up
Photoshop is part of the Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) suite. To use it, you’ll need a subscription.
Steps to Install:
- Visit Adobe.com: Go to the Adobe website and sign up for a Creative Cloud plan that includes Photoshop. The “Photography Plan” is often the most affordable option for beginners.
- Download the Creative Cloud Desktop App: This app manages all your Adobe software.
- Install Photoshop: open the Creative Cloud app, find Photoshop in the list, and click “Install”.
- System Requirements: Ensure your computer meets the minimum requirements (RAM, processor, graphics card) for a smooth experience. Photoshop can be resource-intensive!
1.3 Creating Your First Document
Once you launch Photoshop, you’ll be greeted by the Home Screen. This is your starting point.
To create a new document:
- Click the New File button on the left side of the Home Screen.
- The New Document Dialog will appear. This window is crucial for setting up your canvas correctly.
Key Settings in the New Document Dialog:
- Preset Details: Name your file (e.g., “My First Project”).
- Width and Height: Set the dimensions of your canvas. You can use pixels (for web), inches (for print), or other units.
- Tip: For a standard web image, try 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high.
- Resolution: This determines the quality of the image.
- Web/Screen: 72 Pixels/Inch (PPI) is standard.
- Print: 300 Pixels/Inch (PPI) is recommended for high-quality prints.
- Color Mode:
- RGB Color: Best for screens and web.
- CMYK Color: Best for professional printing.
- Background Contents: Choose White, Black, or Transparent. White is a good default.
Action: Set your Width to 1920, Height to 1080, Units to Pixels, Resolution to 72, and Color Mode to RGB Color. Then, click Create.
1.4 The Interface Overview (Brief)
Congratulations! You’ve just created your first Photoshop document. You are now looking at the Workspace.
In the center is your Canvas—the white area where you will create your art. Surrounding it are various tools and panels that we will explore in detail in the next chapter.
For now, practice creating new documents with different dimensions to get a feel for the setup process.
Next Up: In Chapter 2, we will take a detailed tour of the interface, understanding the Menu Bar, Toolbar, and Panels.
